What is IPTV, and how does it actually work?
IPTV stands for Internet Protocol Television: television delivered over your internet connection instead of through a cable, a satellite dish or a rooftop aerial. This page explains the mechanics, the jargon, the equipment you need and the legal position — without selling to you.

What is IPTV?
IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) is television delivered as data over an internet connection rather than through a coaxial cable, a satellite dish or a terrestrial aerial. A source feed for each channel is encoded in a datacentre, split into short segments, and published to edge servers worldwide. An app on your TV, streaming stick, phone or computer requests those segments from the nearest server and plays them back. You need an internet connection of at least 15 Mbps for HD, roughly 25 Mbps for 4K, and any modern internet-connected device — no dish, no installation and no engineer visit.
Most explanations of IPTV are either a sales page in disguise or three paragraphs of network engineering. This one aims to sit in between: enough detail that you understand what is happening when you press a channel button, and enough plain language that you do not need a background in broadcast to follow it.

How IPTV differs from aerial, satellite and cable
Every method delivers the same broadcast to your screen. What changes is the path it takes and what can interrupt it.

The practical consequence is worth stating plainly: with aerial and satellite, weather and physical alignment are your enemies. With cable, your service is tied to a physical line at a fixed address, and moving house means an engineer visit. With IPTV, the single point of failure is your internet connection — which is both the weakness and the reason it can follow you to a hotel, a second home or another country without any hardware at all.
The mechanics
What happens between the broadcast and your screen
Five stages, from source feed to playback. This is the same chain on any competent IPTV service.

The broadcast is captured
A satellite or fibre feed of each channel is received at a datacentre. This is the same source signal a cable company receives — the difference is what happens next.

It is encoded and segmented
The feed is encoded (typically H.264 or H.265/HEVC) and chopped into short segments of a few seconds each, at several quality levels. Segmenting is what makes adaptive playback possible.

Segments are published to edge servers
Those segments are pushed to servers in 14 locations worldwide, so a viewer in Sydney is not pulling video across an ocean from a server in Frankfurt.

Your player requests the nearest edge
When you open a channel, your app is routed to the closest healthy edge server. Latency drops, channel-change time drops, and the load spreads across the network instead of concentrating on one machine.

The player reassembles and plays
Your app downloads segments a few seconds ahead, decodes them and plays them back seamlessly. If your connection dips, it steps down to a lower quality level rather than stopping — and if the edge server degrades, session handoff moves you without interrupting the picture.
Stages three and four are where providers genuinely differ. Anyone can encode a feed; publishing it to enough edge locations and routing sessions intelligently between them is expensive, and it is what determines whether a service survives a Saturday afternoon. Every IPTV term you'll encounter, defined
These eight terms cover virtually all the jargon in IPTV setup guides, support threads and provider marketing.

- A plain-text file listing channel names and the URL of each stream. It is the oldest and most universally supported way to load an IPTV service, and it works in almost any player — but it carries no programme guide and no on-demand catalogue.
- Xtream CodesAn API standard, not a company
- A structured connection method where the player asks the server for the channel list, the programme guide and the on-demand library separately. This is why players using it show posters, categories and a working guide. It is the preferred method on DrexTV.
- EPGElectronic Programme Guide
- The grid showing what is on now and next, typically covering seven days ahead and, on our service, up to 72 hours of catch-up behind. Without an EPG you have a channel list; with one you have a television service.
- VODVideo On Demand
- Films and series you start whenever you like, as opposed to live channels running on a schedule. Our library holds 140,000+ titles.
- BitrateData per second, measured in Mbps
- How much data a stream sends each second. Higher bitrate means more detail retained, especially in fast motion. Our 4K channels run up to 22 Mbps, HD up to 8 Mbps. A channel labelled 4K at 6 Mbps is not really 4K in any meaningful sense.
- BufferingThe player waiting for data
- The player keeps a few seconds of video in reserve. If data arrives more slowly than it is played, that reserve empties and playback pauses. It is caused either by your connection or by the provider's server, and the two are distinguishable — see our buffering guide.
- Anti-freezeSession handoff between servers
- A provider-side technique where a degrading stream is moved to a healthy server mid-playback without stopping the picture. It is the single biggest reliability differentiator between IPTV services, and it is why the same channel can be flawless on one provider and unwatchable on another.
The question everyone asks
Is IPTV legal?
A straight answer, with the distinction that most pages on this subject blur.
IPTV as a technology is entirely legal
Internet Protocol Television is a delivery method, in the same way that HTTP is a delivery method for web pages. Major broadcasters, national telecoms operators and every mainstream streaming platform use IPTV technology. There is nothing legally distinctive about the transport itself.
Legality depends on content rights, not on the protocol
What determines whether any television service is lawful is whether the content it carries is properly licensed for the territory it is being shown in. That is a question about rights agreements, and it is the same question whether the delivery is by cable, satellite or IP.
Your obligations as a viewer
Laws governing the reception of broadcast content differ substantially between countries, and in some places between states or provinces. How IPTV compares with subscription streaming apps
People often use "IPTV" and "streaming" interchangeably, and technically they are close relatives — both deliver video over IP, both segment it, both adapt quality to your connection. The meaningful distinction is commercial rather than technical.
A subscription streaming service licenses a catalogue of on-demand content, produces some of its own, and generally carries no live linear channels. You choose a title and it starts. An IPTV service carries live television channels running to a schedule — news as it breaks, sport as it happens, the programme your family has watched at the same time for twenty years — and usually adds catch-up and an on-demand library alongside.
That is why households increasingly run both, and why the arithmetic has become uncomfortable: four subscription services at $8 to $23 each, plus a cable or satellite package for live channels, adds up to well over $150 a month for a set of overlapping catalogues and a channel lineup you do not watch most of.
What determines whether IPTV looks good
Four things, in descending order of importance, and only one of them is your internet connection.
Source quality. A stream can never be better than the feed it came from. A channel captured from a low-bitrate source and upscaled will look soft regardless of how fast your line is. This is why bitrate figures matter more than resolution labels.
Provider capacity at peak. Most quality complaints about IPTV are not about resolution at all — they are about freezing during big fixtures, which is a concurrency problem on the provider's side. A service dimensioned for average load will fail at peak no matter how good your connection is.
Route length. Every additional network hop between the server and your router adds latency and another opportunity for packet loss. This is the entire argument for a distributed edge network rather than a handful of powerful central servers.
Your connection. Genuinely important, but usually the least likely cause once you are comfortably above the threshold. Consistency matters more than peak speed: a stable 30 Mbps line delivers better 4K than a 300 Mbps line that dips hard every few minutes. Wired Ethernet beats Wi-Fi, and 5 GHz Wi-Fi beats 2.4 GHz. Choosing an IPTV provider without getting burned
The IPTV market contains a large number of resellers operating on someone else's infrastructure with no capacity control, and a smaller number of operators who actually run servers. Distinguishing them from a marketing page is close to impossible, so use behaviour rather than claims.
Insist on a genuinely free trial with no card details, and use it during a peak window rather than a quiet Tuesday. Ask a specific technical question before you pay — how many edge locations, what bitrate the 4K channels run at, whether session handoff exists — and see whether you get an answer or a sales pitch. Check that support responds within minutes, not days, because a stream problem during a live match is worthless to fix tomorrow.
