IPTV setup, device by device, in about 5 minutes

Six complete guides covering every device family we support. Each one gives you the right player for that hardware, numbered steps with the exact menu paths, the settings worth changing, and fixes for the five faults we see most often on that device.

Quick answer

How do I set up IPTV?

Install an IPTV player app on your device, then log in with the Xtream Codes username, password and server URL from your provider. On Android and Android TV the player installs from Google Play; on Firestick you sideload it through Amazon's Downloader app; on Samsung and LG televisions you install from the TV store and register the set's MAC address; on MAG boxes you enter a portal URL and no app is needed. Setup takes about 5 minutes.

There is no single IPTV setup procedure, because the four platform families install software in genuinely different ways. Following Android instructions on a Samsung television, or Firestick instructions on a MAG box, is the most common reason a setup stalls — and it is why a generic "how to install IPTV" guide is usually worse than useless.

Pick your device below. If you are choosing new hardware rather than using what you have, the short version is: Android TV boxes give the best experience, the Fire TV Stick 4K Max gives the best value, Apple TV 4K gives the most polished playback, and MAG boxes are worth it only if you specifically want a device that boots straight to live television.

IPTV installation is not one recipe

Search results for “IPTV setup” and “IPTV installation” collapse six platform families into one numbered list. That is why so many people fail at the login screen. Firestick sideloads through Downloader. Samsung and LG register a MAC address. MAG uses a portal URL. Android TV installs from Play Store. Apple TV uses the App Store. A computer can use VLC for a test and a real player for daily viewing. Follow the card for the device in your hands.

If you have not chosen hardware yet, read Smart TV versus IPTV box first. This hub assumes you already have a screen. An IPTV box is optional. The subscription still works without one. drextv.com is the UK and international login; these install steps do not change if you watch in London or Lisbon — only the television brand does.

M3U vs Xtream Codes

Which login method to choose

This one decision affects more of your day-to-day experience than the player app you pick, and most guides skip past it.

MethodWhat you enterWhat you getWhen to use it
Xtream Codes APIUsername + password + server URLLive TV, 7-day EPG, catch-up, on-demandAlmost every device. Choose this.
M3U playlistOne long playlist URLLive TV onlyVLC, older players, desktop quick tests
Stalker portalPortal URL + registered MACLive TV, EPG, on-demand via middlewareMAG boxes and STB emulators only

The practical difference is large. An M3U playlist is a flat list of channel URLs — your player gets names and streams and nothing else, so there is no programme guide, no catch-up and no on-demand section. Xtream Codes is an API, so the player can ask our server for the guide, the catch-up windows and the film library, and present them properly.

There is also a practical typing argument. An M3U URL is often over a hundred characters including a token; Xtream Codes is a short username, a short password and a server address. On a television remote, that difference is several minutes and several typos.

We issue all three methods on every account at no extra cost, so this is a free choice rather than a purchase decision. We compare them in more depth here.

Applies to everything

Six rules that apply on every device

Follow these regardless of which guide you use. Between them they prevent the great majority of setup problems and support tickets.

Rule 01

Wire it if you possibly can

An Ethernet cable to your streaming device eliminates the single most common cause of buffering. If that is impossible, use the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band rather than 2.4 GHz, and do not hide the device behind the television chassis where the metal blocks the signal.

Rule 02

Type credentials with a phone keyboard

Mistyped credentials cause more failed setups than everything else combined. On Android TV use the Google TV phone app; on Apple TV tap the keyboard notification that appears on your iPhone; on Firestick use copy and paste from Downloader's browser.

Rule 03

Include the port number in the server URL

The Xtream Codes server URL ends with a colon and a port number. Players fail silently without it, which produces a login error that looks like a wrong password. Copy the URL from your activation email exactly.

Rule 04

Build a favourites list on day one

A 24,000+-channel list is unusable until it is curated. Spend ten minutes marking your regular channels as favourites and hiding groups you do not need — it is the difference between a premium-feeling TV and an overwhelming one.

Rule 05

Raise the buffer on Wi-Fi, lower it on Ethernet

A 2 to 5 second network buffer absorbs brief wireless dips at the cost of a slightly slower channel change. On a wired connection you can keep it low for near-instant channel changes.

Rule 06

Enable hardware decoding

Hardware decoding offloads video from the CPU to the chipset. On a laptop it stops the fans; on a budget streaming box it is the difference between smooth 4K and a slideshow. It is on by default in most players but worth confirming.

Get credentials first, then follow your guide

The free 24-hour trial issues working credentials in about 60 seconds, so you can work through your device's setup guide with real login details rather than reading it in the abstract.

Setup questions

Common setup questions

How long does IPTV setup take?

About 5 minutes on most devices, and closer to two minutes on Android TV where no sideloading is required. Most of the time is spent installing a player app; entering your DrexTV credentials takes under a minute.

Should I use Xtream Codes or an M3U playlist?

Xtream Codes, in almost every case. It delivers the seven-day programme guide, catch-up TV and the on-demand library, and it is a short username and password rather than a long URL, which makes it far easier to type on a remote. Use M3U only in players that do not support Xtream Codes, such as VLC.

Which IPTV player app should I use?

TiviMate if your device runs Android or Android TV — it has the best interface and supports recording. IPTV Smarters Pro as a free universal choice across Firestick, Android, iOS and desktop. IBO Player Pro or Smart IPTV on Samsung and LG televisions. iPlayTV on Apple TV. MAG boxes need no app at all.

Do I need to sideload apps or jailbreak my device?

No jailbreaking, ever. On Android and Android TV every major player is on Google Play, so it is an ordinary install. On Firestick you sideload through Amazon's own Downloader app, which is a documented and supported Fire OS workflow that does not affect your warranty. Apple TV and smart TVs install from their own official stores.

Why does my login fail even though the password is right?

Three causes, in order of frequency: the server URL is missing its port number, a trailing space was picked up in a copy-paste, or the case is wrong — credentials are case-sensitive. Delete the profile and retype all three fields by hand.

Do I need an IPTV box?

No. The subscription is the service; a box is optional hardware. Firestick, Samsung and LG Smart TVs, Android TV, Apple TV, a phone or a computer all work. A MAG or Android box is only useful if you want a dedicated living-room player.

Can I use the same account on more than one device?

Every DrexTV plan includes one simultaneous stream. You can install the app on as many devices as you like — a stick in the living room, a phone on the commute, a laptop in a hotel — because the limit is on concurrent streams, not installations. If you need two screens playing at once, an extra connection is $4.99 a month on any plan, with no change of term and no device registration step.

What internet speed do I need?

Per stream: about 5 Mbps for SD, 10 Mbps for 720p, 15 Mbps for 1080p and 25 Mbps for 4K. Sustained throughput during your evening peak matters far more than your best speed-test result.
